How to create your dream nursery on a budget Series! Todays Topic:Furniture

Nursery furniture can be very expensive but it doesn't have to be! As seen in the first post of this series "How to create a dream nursery on a budget" we bought our crib at Wall-mart for only $169.00 and couldn't be happier with it!  The crib is the only piece of furniture that we bought from a retail store for her entire room! All the other furniture pieces including her mirror, lamp, dresser , side table, bookcase, and chalk board were found at an antique store, used furniture shop or tag sale (garage sale). We spent less than $300.00. Excluding the white potterybarn rocking chair which was reused from her older brothers nursery.

Here are a few before and after shots of the furniture we found. We painted all pieces the same bright white and added new hardware. So easy and affordable.

The bench before was a light blue with silver pull hardware but with a little white paint, glass knobs (found at Home Depot) and a new cushion it became the perfect window seat.  We were so lucky to find this piece because it was the perfect hight and width to place right in fron of her window. It now adds extra seating and storage for her toys.

The Dresser/changing table we also painted white and added new hardware using the same glass knobs as the window seat bench .

The chalk board we decided not to paint and leave rustc white . We used paint chalk that can only be removed with water to write the definition of our baby girls name on the board using a projector. ( tutorial on this coming soon ) . It was such a fun project and I love the final result! I actually passed this chalk board up the first trip to the antique shop but after being home for a half hour or so I called my Dad back up and said " We have to go back and get that chalk board "! He went a few days later on his lunch break and luckily it was still there! I have the best dad ever ! What a lucky find!
All this adorable side table and mirror needed was a little white paint !  They both have similar curves as the window seat bench and with the same color paint the three pieces all coordinate so nicely together.

There's my dad's reflection working hard on the room! We have made such great memories ! He was so proud to help create his first granddaughters nursery ! One of the bennifits of DIY work besides just the financial benefit.

This cute rocking chair my Dad found at a tag sale for $5 !!!! It is so adorable ! A little white paint and a cushion and it's perfect !

The bookcase just needed some sanding and repairs of holes in the front and again a coat of our trusty white paint!

My father also found a very beat up lamp and lamp shade for 3 dollars at a tag sale. We spray painted the rusty colored lamp base white and bought an inexpensive lamp shade and covered it with left over fabric from her crib bumpers. I have seen lamp shades similar for over $200.00 retail and without the coordinating fabric!
I wish I had a before picture for you but here is the end result of our lamp that cost under $3O including paint, shade and fabric!

Last but not least , the vanity was another tag sale find by my father . He paid $10.00 for it. We just added a few coats of paint, changed the knob and added a cushion!

So that is how we spent around $300.00 for all of baby Grace's furniture . We are hoping a lot of the pieces will grow with her and she will be able to have them for years to come. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for the next post in "How to design your dream nursery on a budget" with the next topic : bedding and textiles!

Hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend!

Updated Get to Know Me !

Hi There!

Thanks for stopping by! So happy to have you!  To be short and sweet I am a wife, and mother to two beautiful children a prince and princess ! Although I have had this blog for a few years I recently started writing regularly after my daughter was born in December 2013 and I made the decision to leave my job as a child and family therapist to be home full time.  I am blessed to be with my children everyday and try hard not to take it for granted. This blog serves as a creative outlet for me in-between some of the non-glamorous aspects of mommy life (diapers, laundry dirty dishes)!  I have made so many friends writing this blog so far and I look forward to making more! I appreciate all comments and try to respond to each and every one!  I  love to post about decorating our home, DIY tutorials, stories and photos of our family life, along with photos and designers that inspire me. I love light, bright and monochromatic color schemes (as you can see in our home tour).  This monochromatic style has quickly become my signature and is unique to our home.  I do appreciate so many other styles and love to see how others decorate their home unique to fit their families.  Feel free to email me at for questions, comments, or just to introduce yourself! I would love to get to know you ! :)

My sleeping Beauty!

I couldn't resist sharing this picture of my sleeping beauty! Hope everyone is having a wonderful Wednesday!

Grey and Beige Inspiration Board

I created this beige and Grey inspiration board ! Its no secret I love monochromatic color schemes! Espiecally in bedrooms. Nothing is more relaxing and peaceful than monochromatic neutral colors. The mix of patterns, scales and textures helps a neutral room stay away from being boring! All of the furniture, rug and pillows above are from Serena and Lily with the exception of the gold and white side table from Target , and bedding from Annie Selke Pine Cone Hill.

I would so love to bring this room to life!! Maybe I should start an E-design service !! ;)

Here is another grey and beige inspiration found on Pinterest and published by New England Home Magazine. I have searched for the designer of this room with no luck! Please share designer if known. I would love to credit them.

Happy Wednesday Everyone! Thank you for stopping by!

Wallpaper in the bedroom

Wallpaper is no longer for grandma's house!  Wallpaper can help bring a room design together and add a huge visual impact ! It can be used as a starting point in the design process, helping to bring all other colors and textiles of a room together. The easiest place to experiment with wallpaper in my option is an accent wall behind a headboard. It's the perfect place to add visual interest and highlight the bed which should be the main focal point in a bedroom!

Large scale florals are one of my favorite wallpaper prints for a bedroom! But I would suggest not adding any other floral prints or textiles (or be very selective of you do.)  Plain crisp bed linens are a good choice. If you choose to add additional floral make sure they are a similar color scheme but a different scale. If your wallpaper has large scale floral use a small scale floral fabric to coordinate. Since this can be tricky I would suggest staying away from dueling florals and choosing other prints instead also being conscious of mixing scale and texture. When in doubt going simple with your bedding like the following three photos below is always a good idea.

Patterned wallpaper is also a good choice if floral is too feminine for your taste ( or your husbands) . Us wives  have to remember it is your husbands room too! ;)

Grass cloth is also a beautiful option! It adds texture and interest without becoming too busy! I have heard it said that the best design goes unnoticed. Grass cloth can take your design to the next level without overpowering the room.

Demask patterns instantly give your room a more traditional and formal feel. In the room below the wallpaper becomes the star feature of the room !

And don't forget the kids bedrooms! Wallpaper can add color and playfulness in a kids space and help to bring different colors together! Here are two of my favorite children's bedrooms with wallpaper!

I would love to add this serena and lily wallpaper to the wall behind our bed !  What do you think ? Too busy? Perfect? Should I do it?
Thanks for stoping by! ;) We our busy tonight bringing  my son to his pre school open house and his first soccer practice ! Yikes! He's growing too fast ! Hope you have a good night too !
